If the company is able to deliver on its promise to bring a Bolt to market with a 200-mile driving range at a price of $30,000, GM may finally find the sales success that has so far eluded the target of the Who Killed the Electric Car? documentary hatchet job.

The electric-orange Bolt would look little different in production, GM spokespeople pledged, though its show-car interior appointments would not be expected to make the leap.

Ford successfully kept a lid on the very existence of its GT supercar project until rumours began leaking only a month or so ago. Even then, no photos appeared prior to the car’s debut on 12 January.

The company went so far as to create a dedicated secure area in its design centre, according to Moray Callum, Ford vice president of design. But if the surprise factor helped, the Ford GT’s near total monopoly of this auto show was owed to its superlative design.

The GT is over a year removed from production, but many components are solidly in place, thanks to careful work by the engineering team to optimise the aerodynamic efficiency of the body.

General Motors (GM) is developing a large, rear-drive chassis to underpin the coming Cadillac CT6, which will arrive at the 2015 New York auto show in April, but the Buick division apparently has covetous plans of its own for this same hardware.

The Avenir turned heads of some illustrious company in Detroit, including Volvo and Geely design director Peter Horbury, who deemed it one of his favourites at the show. “It’s nice to see Buick getting its rhythm,” Horbury remarked.

Indeed, the spacious sedan might have worn a Roadmaster badge in an earlier era for Buick, but instead carries a less American-sounding moniker which is critical in the mushrooming Chinese market, where a jumbo-size Buick is an almost certain smash hit.

As a concept rather than a production introduction, the Avenir is notably short on technical specifics, though Buick envisions the car being propelled by GM’s next-generation direct-injected V6 engine, nine-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel-drive system.

The protracted gestation of Acura’s long-awaited all-wheel drive mid-engine supercar finally reached fruition with the arrival of the production NSX. The 550-horsepower hybrid sports car matches two electric motors with a gasoline V6 engine.

Incredibly, Acura trashed its engine plans for the NSX just a year and a half ago when engineers realised that a transverse engine would not give the car the needed performance. They redesigned the car, turning the engine 90 degrees and stretching the bodywork to cover the resulting longer car.

Come summer, Acura will start assembling NSXs at its new production facility in the midwestern US state of Ohio, delivering cars to buyers such as US comedian Jerry Seinfeld – who watched the press conference from the front row – by fall.

The Korean carmaker identified an unserved niche, bringing a conceptual pickup truck designed to appeal to young drivers who do not want, or cannot afford, the big toys. The Santa Cruz’s muscular bodywork provides a small open bed for hauling bulky items such as bicycles, while also containing a small back seat for carrying friends for at least short trips.

The Santa Cruz concept is powered by a 2-litre turbodiesel four-cylinder engine rated at 190hp and 300lb-ft of torque, delivering claimed fuel efficiency in the high-30mpg range. A production version of the vehicle seems certain, however, to be gasoline-powered, considering the cost difference between petrol and diesel in the US.

For maximum utility of the short cargo bed, Hyundai designers equipped the concept vehicle with both a retractable built-in cargo cover for security and a bed extender to provide the necessary length for longer items such as motorcycles – product planning that dovetails nicely with the notion of the Pacific Coast Highway that passes through Santa Cruz, California.

Considering the excellence of the departed Lexus IS F performance sedan, it should not surprise that the brand would apply the same bluntly effective formula to the larger GS, producing – what else? – the GS F. It starts with a 467-horsepower 5-litre V8 engine and eight-speed automatic gearbox, both of which carrying over from the newly launched RC F sports coupe. The engine revs to a 7,300rpm redline, while the four available driving modes, Normal, Eco, Sport and Sport S+, determine the transmission’s shift schedule and engine exhaust note.

Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires and six-piston front brakes help provide the turning and stopping power needed to go with the V8’s thrust, though occupants could be excused for focusing instead on the GS F’s opulent cabin and 17-speaker Mark Levinson premium audio system.

Whether the sound comes from the four chromed exhaust tips or those 17 speakers, the GS F appears to be an eminently capable conductor.

Honda renewed its push into fuel-cell vehicles with the Honda FCV Concept, a preview of the production model set to arrive in March 2016. It will be available first in Japan, followed by California, because those areas have refuelling infrastructure in place to support the cars, said Ed Cohen, American Honda Motor’s vice president of government affairs.

Compared to the company’s previous effort, the FCV Clarity, the new car’s fuel cell is said to be 60% more powerful and 33% smaller. The increase in density clears critical space in the cabin for an additional passenger compared to the previous model. “I think the most important this is, if you look at the back seat, it easily seats five people now,” Cohen said.

The car will travel 300 miles on a tank of gaseous hydrogen, and can completely refill from empty in just three minutes using the latest 70 megapascal pressure pumps. This ease of fuelling, combined with the ability of fuel cells to scale up and down to meet the needs of each particular application, make it more broadly useful to more drivers than battery-electric drive, Cohen said.

Alfa expects the 4C Spider to begin sales in summer at an undisclosed price, but with severely restricted supply and a fledgling North American distribution network, sightings will be rare indeed.

The Q7 led Audi’s move into the crossover segment when introduced in 2005, but a new model eschews the original’s SUV-like bearing in favour of more wagon-like lines.

Despite this change, the new Q7 actually has a higher roofline, but added width and tweaked proportions trick the eye into seeing a lower car. This, according to Audi of America communications manager Mark Dahncke.

While the smaller appearance may be an optical illusion, the Q7’s reduced mass is confirmed by the scale, which reflects a 716lb (325kg) weight loss over the outgoing edition. Combined with reduced aerodynamic drag, the improvements slice an estimated 25% from the Q7 driver’s fuel bill, whether running a gasoline or turbodiesel engine.

Granted, occupants may be too mesmerised by the Q7’s 3D surround sound audio, or the new built-in rear-seat tablet computers, to notice the marrow-deep improvements.

While a concept presaging the replacement of an aged current model is no surprise, Infiniti’s slippery design for the next-generation Q60 Coupe, née G37, showed that even within well-established boundaries, it is possible to deliver an exciting design.

This concept, credited to design chief Alfonso Albaisa, moves the Q60 in the direction of smaller displacement for fuel efficiency, using a twin-turbocharged 3-litre gasoline V6 engine and seven-speed automatic transmission to deliver the boom.

Infiniti is also targeting weight reduction, as the concept is built on an aluminium chassis and is finished in “Arctic Aluminium” paint, suggesting the brand’s commitment to the lightweight material for production of the eventual Q60, which should be along in a year’s time.

On Jan. 14, 2005, the European Space Agency’s Huygens probe dropped through Titan’s atmosphere after a seven-year trek attached to NASA’s Cassini spacecraft. Huygens wasn’t designed to live for very long after atmospheric reentry, but it unveiled a mysterious outer solar system world to us for the first time.

Before this mission, very little was known about Saturn’s largest moon, and scientists were unsure whether Huygens would land on a rocky surface or in an ocean. Titan’s thick atmosphere  composed of primarily nitrogen and clouds of methane and ethane, about 50 percent thicker than our atmosphere signaled to scientists that Titan was similar to a young Earth.

Observations from the Huygens probe and Cassini spacecraft tell us that Titan and Earth share many features, such as sand dunes and lakes. But these features are heavily laced with organic molcules that could support life, leading researchers to speculate about Titan’s potential to nurture microbes.

India’s Chandrayaan-1 satellite confirmed the presence of water on the moon in September 2009, building on flyby observations by other probes on their way elsewhere. Although the lunar surface is still drier than Earth’s driest desert, evidence of water is there, hinting at a solar wind interaction with the moon’s surface that produces water and hydroxyl molecules.

It may not be an oasis up there, but future moon colonists could extract and purify the traces of water from the surface to use for drinking, food cultivation, oxygen and fuel. Or, our colonists could take a trek to the moon’s poles to mine water from the deepest craters

On Oct. 9, 2009, NASA dropped a spent rocket into a crater to produce a 100-foot-wide hole. They found water there too. That rocket produced a massive plume of dust that was analyzed by the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) and ground-based observatories. At least 25 gallons of water ice was detected in the plume.

In 2004, the NASA Stardust mission chased after Comet Wild 2 to find out if the icy mass contained the building blocks for life, since meteorites found on Earth contained organic chemistry that originated from space. Sure enough, in August 2009, NASA announced that they had found samples of glycine  an amino acid  in Stardust’s collection plates. It didn’t stop there, there’s increasing evidence that exoplanets orbiting distant stars contain organic chemistry in their atmospheres.

In 2008, organic chemicals were detected in the disk surrounding a star called HR 4796A, 220 light-years from Earth. And most recently, NASA’s Hubble and Spitzer space telescopes detected carbon dioxide, methane and water vapor in the atmosphere of an exoplanet called HD 209458b.

These discoveries, sparked by Stardust, have transformed our understanding about how life may have formed on Earth. They also give us a strong hint that life may not be unique to Earth; the universe appears to be manufacturing organic chemistry everywhere.

There’s a monster living in the center of our galaxy, 26,000 light-years from Earth. By 2008, astronomers tracking the behavior of stars orbiting an invisible point confirmed that the monster is a supermassive black hole called Sagittarius A.

A lone star called “S2,” with a very fast orbit, has been tracked since 1995 around this invisible point. In 2002, Rainer Schödel and his team at the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics announced that the only explanation for S2’s fast orbit was that it was circling a very compact, massive object  a supermassive black hole  that was stopping the star from flinging out of its orbit into space.

In 2008, after S2 completed one 16-year orbit, it was confirmed that the star was orbiting a black hole with a gargantuan mass of approximately 4.3 million suns. The confirmation of a supermassive black hole in the center of the Milky Way boosted the theory that most galaxies contain a supermassive black hole at their cores.

In June 2001, NASA set out to find the ancient “echo” of the Big Bang by mapping the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation that buzzes like static throughout the cosmos, using the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) .

When the universe was born, vast amounts of energy were unleashed, which eventually condensed into the stuff that makes up the mass of what we see today. The radiation that was created by the Big Bang still exists, but as faint microwaves.

By mapping slight variations in the CMB radiation, the probe has been able to precisely measure the age of the universe (13.73 billion years old) and work out that a huge 96 percent of the mass of the universe is made up of stuff we cannot see. Only 4 percent of the cosmic mass is held in the stars and galaxies we observe; the rest is held in “dark energy” and “dark matter.”

In 2002, the Hubble Space Telescope was upgraded with a new instrument, the Advanced Camera for Surveys, that revealed the presence of a mysterious force called “dark energy.”

The camera was set up to help researchers understand why Type Ia supernovae were dimmer than expected. Hubble’s observations of these supernovae discovered that they weren’t dimmer because the stars were different (they should all explode with the same brightness). The only explanation was that the universe’s expansion was unexpectedly and inexplicably speeding up. This accelerated expansion was making the light dim over vast cosmic distances. Hubble’s discovery led to a better understanding of what dark energy is — an invisible force that opposes gravity, causing the universe’s expansion to speed up.

In 2006, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) decided that the likelihood of finding more small rocky bodies in the outer solar system was so high that the definition “a planet” needed to be reconsidered. The end result: Pluto was reclassified as a dwarf planet and it acquired a “minor planet designator” in front of its name: “134340 Pluto.”

Mike Brown’s 2005 discovery of Eris was the trigger that changed the face of our solar system, defining the planets and adding Pluto to a growing family of dwarf planets.

The observations of the Bullet Cluster, officially known as galaxy cluster 1E0657-56, did not explain what dark matter is. They did, however, give researchers hints that dark matter particles act a certain way, which they can build on.

Hubble spotted one massive exoplanet orbiting the star Fomalhaut, 25 light-years from Earth. These finds pose a profound question: How long will it be until we spot an Earth-like world with an extraterrestrial civilization looking back at us?
